Veteran Paediatrician

Ri Yon Sil, PhD and associate professor who is the chief of the paediatric dental care laboratory under the dentistry faculty of Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences, has made contributions to the development of paediatric dentistry.

She is in her late 50s. But she, with unusual zeal for inquiry, has engaged in teaching and played a big role in formulating and systematizing paediatric dentistry theoretically and practically over the past 30-odd years. And she has produced scores of research findings.

She has also developed 10-odd kinds of medical supplies which are excellent in terms of quality indexes, treatment efficacy and convenient use.

Among them is a root filling material made with mineral compounds, an advanced dental material for internal treatment of immature permanent teeth, which is of great significance in clinical practice.

Through years of repeated experiments, she succeeded in producing the new dental material by using the powder of Kumgang medicinal stone abundant in the country. It proved to be superior to imported materials in terms of treatment efficacy.

Besides, she has developed various medical appliances and dental hygiene supplies including a portable high-frequency cayter, a device measuring oxygen saturation of blood in tooth pulp and a caries prevention gel. They have been highly appreciated at several festivals and exhibitions.  

She has made public valuable papers at national and international academic seminars, written books and other reference works such as Paediatric Dentistry and Endodontology and trained dozens of holders of academic degrees.
