By Pioneering Limb Oncology

Associate Professor So Song Su, chief of the Limb Tumour Laboratory of the Tumour Institute under the Academy of Medical Sciences, is known as an authority on oncology.

He pioneered limb oncology, a branch of oncology, in the country and developed relevant diagnosis and treatment methods.

Malignant bone and soft tissue tumours on limb account for only 1% of all malignant tumour cases.

The associate professor made painstaking efforts to work out the methods of diagnosing and treating various types of limb tumours.

In those days, he built up basic data for diagnosing and treating soft tissue sarcomas and established relevant surgical methods.

And he theoretically systematized limb oncology for the first time in the country, and wrote many reference books such as “Diagnosis and Treatment of Malignant Bone Tumours” and “Surgical Approach of Bone and Soft Tissue Tumours.”

His paper “Study on Local Recurrence and Survival Rate according to Surgical Approach of Soft Tissue Sarcomas” was highly appreciated at the National Sci-tech Presentation and Exhibition of the Anti-epidemic and Public Health Sector-2022.

In addition, he has put several surgical methods on soft tissue sarcomas on a scientific footing as suited to the constitutional characteristics of Koreans and introduced them into clinical practice.

“Even if there is one patient among a thousand people or ten thousand people, there should be a study and a doctor for treating the patient, and I’d like to say that it’s the duty of a doctor,” he said at the 18th National Symposium of Health Workers on Experience of Devoted Service held last year.
