For Intellectual Development of Children

Kyongsang Nursery in Central District, Pyongyang, directs efforts to developing children's intelligence.

It is the mainstream among its nurses to do their best to find and introduce things, however trifle they may be, if they can help develop children's intelligence.

By combining singing, dancing and playing musical instruments with the effort to develop their intelligence, the nursery encourages them to learn things for the fun of it.

“Child are simple-minded and the criterion for their judging every action is whether it is interesting or not. It is only the adults’ values that studying is important and helpful in the future. If children find it interesting, they will study unprompted, even if they are left to their own devices. It is important to provide them with an environment in which they want to study for the fun of it and do better of their own accord,” said Kim Kum Sil, headmistress of the nursery.

Kim Chun Hui, a nurse with 30-odd-year-long career, said: “What is important is to make children understand that learning is ‘fun.’ Then they will learn with vigour. You should induce them to know that it is most enjoyable to understand the world and make discoveries by using their brains. When they find it pleasant to learn in their childhood, they will enjoy studying all their life.”
