Medical Service

Highly-skilful Doctor

U Ri Chol, chief of obstetrical department No. 4 of Pyongyang Maternity Hospital, is respected in the hospital for his high medical skills.

He perfected methods for difficult surgeries to ensure the health and life of parturient women even in critical circumstances.

He developed and introduced uterine compression suturing for intraoperative uterine atony. This method helps reduce bleeding and preserve the uterus, thereby contributing to improving the quality of life of women.

Previously, it was customary in such cases to perform compression suturing without suturing the uterine incision.

Aware that this procedure is not very effective, he developed a method of performing compression suturing on the basis of first closure of the uterine incision.

He also performed a cesarean section of parturients with a diagnosis of placenta previa, and devised an innovative surgical approach to locate and ligate the uterine artery originating from the internal iliac artery to prevent massive hemorrhage.

Previously, this uterine artery ligation had been generally accepted as a difficult operation procedure that can only be performed by vascular surgeons or gynaecologic oncologists.

However, through his painstaking inquiry and research and bold practice, he proved that obstetricians, too, are quite capable of doing it.

In addition, he developed an effective evaluation system for improving the quality of medical service by pooling his wisdom with researchers of Kim Chaek University of Technology.

He is respected for his ample medical knowledge and high surgical skills. He devotes his wisdom and passion to medical research and service.
