Trailblazers in Treating Orbital Tumour
The ophthalmology department of Kim Man Yu Hospital is recognized at home as a prestigious unit in treating orbital tumour.
Since its opening, the department has made successes in treating eye diseases including orbital tumour.
Medical workers including O Ae Sun and Pak Chun Bok of the department established various treatment and operation methods for different eye diseases long ago.
Among the methods was percutaneous excision of the tumour around an eyebrow, which helped restore eyesight of many patients.
However, this method was limited to tumours easy to remove by surgery and located near the eye. The tumour on the back of the eyeball and large tumours were impossible to remove with this method. After repeated studies, they established a temporotomy-based tumour resection that can also be performed in tumours on the back of the eyeball.
In addition, they directed efforts to avoiding postoperative sequelae such as oculomotor dysfunction and blepharoptosis.
Many patients benefited from their efforts.
Ri Jong Gum, a patient from South Hamgyong Province, recently underwent an operation for a conjunctival tumour of the lid. After the surgery, oculomotor dysfunction disappeared and eyesight improved. She sent a letter of gratitude to the hospital.
“There is a saying that a person’s eyes are worth 800 pounds out of his overall worth of 1 000 pounds. So, we ophthalmologists feel pride in bringing eyesight back to patients,” said department head Kim Myong Su.
