Medical Materials of Great Clinical Significance Developed

The Plastic Surgery Department of Clinical Faculty No. 2 of Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences has achieved successes in treatment by developing advanced medical materials.
The key developer of the materials is assistant associate professor and Doctor Jong Kang Ho who is the chief of the department.
The use of hyaluronic acid soft tissue filler is a global trend in plastic surgery.
Having set an aim of developing a filler by relying on domestically available raw materials and manufacturing techniques, Jong made a strenuous effort for several years and finally succeeded in manufacturing non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid filler by biological method.
As the filler produces no side-effects in treating asymmetrical face, decrease of localized tissue and retractive deformation and correcting tissue defected area and have remarkable cosmetic effects, it enjoys popularity among patients.
Jong also developed biodegradable magnesium alloy board nail through strenuous efforts. A third-generation biomaterial, the board nail has proved superior in clinical practices. As it is dissolved in the body after surgery, a consequent operation for removing the anchors is unnecessary. Besides, the surgery using this board nail does not rely on expensive imported materials but produces higher effect of treatment.
And as it can be applied in all kinds of surgery which require osteosynthesis, the board nail is of great clinical significance.
The newly-developed medical materials were highly appreciated at the national exhibition of sci-tech achievements in the public health sector-2024.
