Effective Cervical Spine Surgical Methods Introduced
The traumatic and orthopaedic surgery research section of Kim Man Yu Hospital has developed advanced cervical spine surgical methods.
Cervical spine injury is unusual in everyday life. However, if the cervical spine is unexpectedly injured, the nerve is compressed by the broken bone, which is in most cases accompanied by general paralysis. It can in turn lead to airway asphyxia and respiratory muscle paralysis. Sometimes, the patient can be placed at risk of death.
Therefore, the treatment of cervical spine injuries is important for helping the patient out of palsy and recovering his working ability as well as for saving his life.
Researchers of the section including its chief Ri Chun Gun, Choe Song Chol and Choe Kwang Myong completed several advanced cervical spine surgical methods with a high rate of recovery on the basis of profound study of the approaches of foreign countries.
One of them is to apply the prostheses with brake sill to the treatment of the cervical vertebral fractures. The prosthesis with brake sill and cervical anterior decompression fixation using it, the fruition of the painstaking efforts of researchers, prove effective in treatment by preventing postoperative injuries of the upper and lower vertebral cones and preventing radicular symptoms.
Besides, the researchers made a single cervical vertebral prosthetic disc and, on this basis, established a new surgical method to effectively manage the dislocation of the traumatic lower cervical spine, which had been regarded as almost impossible to recover, in consideration of the constitutional characteristics of the Korean people.
With the application of surgical methods of great clinical significance to the treatment of patients, the research section is increasing the recovery rate of patients with cervical spine injuries, which had been regarded as fatal in the past.
