Advanced Treatment Method Introduced
The Urology Department of the Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital developed percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) using laser, which is recognized as an advanced technique.
As this technique makes it possible to perform surgery without laparotomy, its application reduces adverse effects on the patient’s health as much as possible and hastens recovery.
When department chief Kim Ok Chol and his colleagues made a foray into this technique, there were few materials for reference.
Therefore, their research work to explore a treatment method as suited to the constitutional features and the disease encountered many difficulties from the beginning.
But they redoubled their efforts with the courage that they could also do whatever others did and with the will to establish the advanced surgical method in an original way at any cost.
They addressed tricky problems one by one and pratised surgical techniques many times.
This effort resulted in the completion of percutaneous nephrolithotomy, an endoscopic approach to urological surgery.
They have extensively applied this technique to clinical practice to effectively treat urinary stones including urolithiasis and renal stones, restoring health to many patients.
