Authority in Sterility Treatment

Doctor and Associate Professor Hong Kyong Sun is the chief of the Sterility Laboratory at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital. A winner of the February 16 Science and Technology Prize, she ranked among the country’s top scientists and technicians in 2019.

She was the first in the country to establish a method for in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. It is highly costly to apply a sterility treatment method in clinical practice as it is one of the world’s cutting-edge breakthroughs. In particular, the requisite culture juices had to be imported from developed countries.

She and her colleagues succeeded in developing alternatives to the expensive reagents and culture juices by using domestically available materials. To this end, they made tireless efforts to put their production lines on a scientific footing and update the technological indexes. Also, she led her subordinates to improve their qualifications and win academic degrees and titles.
