Education in Traditional Medicine Encouraged
When it was founded in Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences in Juche 52 (1963), the Faculty of Koryo Medicine was composed of merely three departments. But it has developed into an educational and scientific research institution with about ten departments and several research sections.
It is staffed with many renowned teachers including Merited Scientist, Academician, Professor and Doctor Chon Un Ju recognized as an authority on Koryo paediatrics, Professor and Doctor Jang Chun Il and Professor and Doctor Kim Sok Gyong famous for his abilities in acupuncture and moxibustion. They have demonstrated the superiority of Koryo medicine at home and in Asian and many other countries, drawing the attention of the academic circles.
The teachers and researchers of the faculty are striving to put the traditional medicine on a new scientific basis. They have pioneered several disciplines like Koryo paediatrics, acupuncture and moxibustion for children and massage for children and compiled many textbooks and reference books, thus proactively contributing to the development of the traditional medicine of the nation.
The faculty combines what is traditional and what is modern in teaching. It has also developed methods of curing various diseases including acute pancreatitis by non-surgical method and perfected an acupuncture and moxibustion therapy in a scientific way. It has also given a scientific explanation to the active mechanism and indications of needling. It has clarified details of elements of young antler and other Koryo medicines and their reaction and put the methods of processing Koryo medicines on a scientific and modern footing. It is training a large number of competent Koryo therapists every year.
