Medical Association Born on Leader’s Initiative

On February 13, 1970 President Kim Il Sung met some senior officials in the public health sector. On that occasion he suggested that it would be very good to organize a medical association for the development of the country’s medical science and regularly discuss the problems that crop up in the medical science and public health sector in the sector-specific societies.

He went on to say that the Ministry of Public Health should organize the medical association and frequently attend the seminars held in foreign countries so as to steadily exchange new technology and experience in medical science.

On June 19 that year he called an official of the Ministry of Public Health. He said to the official that today he read the written opinions submitted by the ministry on the organization of the association and that it would be desirable to organize it as soon as possible, specifying the future work to be carried out by the association. He then underlined the need to organize the sector-specific societies so as to discuss a wide range of issues related with new medical science and technology.

This is how the Medical Association of Korea was formed on the initiative of President Kim Il Sung and under his deep care. The formation of the organization was of epochal significance in the history of development of the country’s medical science.
